Medical Assisting – Associate of Applied Science

The Medical Assisting program at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ is designed to prepare graduates for successful employment in medical offices, clinics, and other healthcare settings. Students gain hands-on experience and practical skills in administrative and clinical procedures. Graduates are equipped to support physicians and other healthcare professionals by performing a wide range of administrative and clinical tasks.
Program Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this program will be able to:
- Perform routine administrative and clinical tasks.
- Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills with patients and healthcare teams.

Degree Requirements
The Medical Assisting A.A.S. degree requires the completion of 60 semester credit hours (SCH).
What Will I Learn?
Students enrolled in the Medical Assisting program will learn how to:
- Perform administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, and handling billing and insurance claims.
- Assist physicians with patient examinations, treatments, and minor surgical procedures.
- Collect and process laboratory specimens and perform basic lab tests.
- Administer medications and perform basic diagnostic procedures, including EKGs.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
- Apply legal and ethical guidelines in a healthcare setting.
- Prepare to sit for a national medical assisting credentialing exam.

Degree Requirements
To earn the Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Medical Assisting, students must:

- Achieve a grade of “C” or better in all courses.
- Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 throughout the program.
- Satisfy all other graduation requirements as outlined in the LIT Catalog.
